Nintendo Direct Event September 2021: Recap

Nintendo Direct Event September 2021: Recap

With the release of Nintendo Switch OLED weeks away (October 8 – tentative), Nintendo took the opportunity today (September 24 PST) to let us know what is to come for the console this year and into 2022. The Nintendo Direct presentation came with announcements that quench (or even further) the thirst of fans who are waiting for some kind of update to their beloved Nintendo games.  And Nintendo being Nintendo, casually drops a bomb that left most people with their mouth agape.

You can watch the whole presentation here:

But not everyone has time for that, so here is our recap.

Nintendo Direct Highlights:

Kirby And The Forgotten Land

Spring 2022

The one and only pink cutie who always survives - Kirby – is back! And it looks like he is in a post-apocalyptic world where the natural world has taken over dilapidated buildings. Not only that, Kirby will also traverse this world in a three-dimensional space. At first glance, it’s like an open game but as you look closely from the gameplay reveal, it will be akin to Super Mario 3D World.

Chocobo GP

2022

Square Enix is crafting its own racing game but with Final Fantasy characters and magic spells. Now, how would this stack up against Mario Kart 8 Deluxe? We’ll find out once the game launches.

Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak Expansion

There’s always something new in the Monster Hunter Universe but it will get larger once again with the massive expansion: Sunbreak. It’s a paid DLC just like Iceborne to Monster Hunter World. This expansion will feature new monsters, locales, hunting actions, and quest ranks.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Update

Ever since the release, there have been no other exciting contents in Animal Crossing: New Horizons except for the Custom Design Pro Editor Plus feature and a slew of Sanrio-themed characters. But Nintendo hopes to change this with the upcoming major update on November. And it seems that one of the many things that the fans have been begging for will finally materialize in the world of ACNH: Brewster’s Café – The Roost.

The trailer is short as there will be a full New Horizons broadcast scheduled for October.

Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis games will be available on Nintendo Switch online

The classics are coming to Nintendo Switch Online. Soon, players will experience Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis retro games online. This is a new tier to the online subscription service. The service will launch Nintendo 64 titles like Super Mario 64, Star Fox 64, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. For Genesis, Sonic 2, Ecco the Dolphin, and Golden Axe will be initially offered. But more will come after the release.

SSD with built-in heatsink

Alongside this, Nintendo will also be selling the original looking N64 and Genesis controllers but wireless!

Splatoon 3

Splatoon 3’s trailer is as chaotic as the game could be. The game mechanics is the same as the previous games where two four-player teams duke it out to cover as much ground as they could before the timer runs. Whichever has the most inked territory wins. There’s also a glimpse of new equipment that the players can use to achieve the end goal.

It’s all fun until midway where the single-player story mode is revealed in a fever dream-like manner. The mammals will return in the post-apocalyptic world of Inklings. Not much info is shared how players will progress in this mode. But it will be hairy, that’s for sure!

Bayonetta 3

2022

All hail! Our favorite Umbra witch who we can only wish to step on us is back. After a long while, we finally have an update on Bayonetta 3 with the gameplay reveal and it is full of action as expected. On another note, yes Bayonetta’s hair is braided and yes, she’s wearing a skirt.

Super Mario Movie

December 21, 2022

Saving the best for last, an animated Super Mario movie is in the works. This is not a dream/nightmare. And do you know what else is surprising? The thicc Italian plumber will be voiced by none other than…Chris Pratt! Talk about the unexpected! It really makes you wonder how Mario will sound in this movie. Will Chris Pratt try to imitate Mario’s accent or will he sound like himself just like how he did when he voiced Emmet in the Lego Movies and Barley in Onward?

But for our peace of mind, the actors casted for the other characters are logical: Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Jack Black as Bowser. Although this is a Mario movie, Donkey Kong will make an appearance and will be voiced by Seth Rogen. Charle Martinet – the original voice of Mario, will also be involved in “surprise cameos”.
