Nintendo Switch Pro—oh sorry Nintendo Switch OLED announced!

Nintendo Switch Pro—oh sorry Nintendo Switch OLED announced!

Just yesterday July 6, 2021, Nintendo announced the newest member to the Switch family: the Nintendo Switch OLED and it is expected to hit the shelves on October 8, 2021. This upgraded version of the Nintendo Switch console will feature a 7” OLED screen, a wider stand with additional adjustment options, a wired LAN port in the dock, an improved built-in speaker, 64GB internal storage, and new color.

What do these upgrades mean for your gameplay?

OLED Screen
7” OLED screen The wider OLED screen provides a more vibrant and crisp visual. And the larger screen with a slimmer bevel (the black frame around the screen), makes way to immersive gaming.
Adjustable stand
Wide, Adjustable Stand The stand that runs along the backside of the tablet gives more base thus more stability compared with the flimsy itty-bitty kickstand on the original console. Don’t we all like to feel more supported? It also offers more suitable viewing angles.
64GB internal Space
64GB Internal Storage Doubling the size of the internal storage means you have more space for your fave games. But let’s be honest, is 64GB ever enough? We’re all more likely to expand it still with a memory card.
64GB internal Space
Improved built-in speaker It’s unclear what this might entail but Nintendo stated that you’ll “Enjoy enhanced audio from the system’s onboard speakers”
64GB internal Space
Wired LAN port This will give you an option to connect directly to your internet via a cable which may establish a more reliable and stable connection to the source. Does this mean that Nintendo is also preparing for full-on cloud-based gaming? Maybe…

Nintendo Switch OLED will be available in two colors, the classic Neon Red/Neon Blue and All-White.

Far from the rumored Nintendo Switch Pro, it seems that Nintendo Switch OLED is not really your “beefier” Nintendo Switch in terms of CPU, RAM, battery life, resolution, and Bluetooth capacity. Nintendo confirms that it will still have the same CPU and RAM so no improvement in loading time (although the current experience is not that bad). In addition, it seems we will also be stuck with 1080p resolution when it's docked unlike the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S that can be displayed on 4K and upcoming 8K. But given that Nintendo is all about portability, they are bound to have compromises. Quite unfortunately also, the Bluetooth capacity on Nintendo Switch OLED is still reserved for joy-cons. Sad to say, we still cannot use our lovely BT headsets without any adapter. For now, we can only wish that these could be improved if there are any iteration in the works.

But I digress. Hopefully, it becomes available here in the Philippines on the actual release date so we can experience it already. For now, there is no definitive news yet on its availability and pre-order offers in the country. But we’ll surely post on our official social media channels if there is one.

How do you feel about this upcoming console? Are you up for it?
