Nintendo Switch 2 Unveiled: Bigger Screen, Improved Controllers, Backward Compatibility, and more!

We now have our first look at the Nintendo Switch 2. You can watch the full trailer above.

While the trailer didn’t reveal much about the technical specifications, it gave us a glimpse of some exciting improvements the upcoming console will feature.

Larger Screen for Immersive Gameplay

Right off the bat, it’s clear the Nintendo Switch 2 will have a larger screen, promising a more immersive gaming experience. Whether it’s an LCD or OLED display remains to be seen, but the increased screen size alone is enough to pique our interest.

Redesigned Kickstand

At the back, there’s a noticeable change to the stand. The Nintendo Switch OLED features a full-width stand with a solid feel that has already satisfied most users. Meanwhile, the Nintendo Switch 2 now has a slimmer design with a cut-out and a hole in the middle. Whether this new design enhances usability remains to be a wonder—we’ll know once we get to experience it firsthand.

Updated Controllers

As expected, a larger screen means larger controllers. Like the original and its various iterations, the Nintendo Switch 2 will feature left and right controllers. This time, they sport a sleek all-black design with accents of the iconic red and blue. The insides, which serve as the top part when used on their own, also protrude more, potentially making them more comfortable to hold. What’s more, it seems the controllers will now connect magnetically, eliminating the need to slide them in place—a convenient upgrade.

Ports and Connectivity

The console still includes a USB-C port on the bottom for docking, and the power, volume buttons, and headphone jack remain at the top. However, there’s an intriguing addition: an extra USB-C port. Could this be for an additional charger or perhaps compatibility with external storage? Time will tell.

Sleek Dock Design

The dock also has a refreshed look, featuring more rounded corners for a modern aesthetic. The trailer didn’t showcase any additional ports or functionality.

Backward Compatibility Confirmed

One of the most exciting revelations is that the Nintendo Switch 2 will not only have exclusive games but will also be backward compatible with Nintendo Switch games. This ensures players can continue enjoying their existing library on the new console.

While the trailer teased these exciting features, it left us with many unanswered questions about the console’s technical capabilities. Will we finally be able to play Nintendo Switch games in 4K? Can we now expect 60fps performance? Will it surprise us with unprecedented features on the console? Hopefully, these details will be revealed during the Nintendo Direct event on April 2, 2024.
