Finally! PS5 M.2 SSD Expansion Slot is now unlocked for everyone!

Finally! PS5 M.2 SSD Expansion Slot is now unlocked for everyone!

Finally, you can now expand your PlayStation 5 (PS5) storage space by adding a Solid State Drive (SSD) in the dedicated slot. This is brought about by the recent PS5 software update that is globally available.

The previous update allows you to use an external hard disk drive (HDD) to transfer files but the games are not playable directly from it. Now, you can use the installed SSD to download and copy files plus launch PS4 and PS5 games.

But just like any other computing system, PS5 has specific requirements for an SSD to be compatible.

Interface PCI-Express Gen4x4 supported M.2 NVMe SSD (Key M)
Storage 250 GB–4 TB
Supported sizes 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, 22110
Size including heat-dissipation mechanism Width: up to 25 mm
Length: 30/40/6080/110 mm
Thickness: up to 11.25 mm (up to 8.0 mm from above the board, up to 2.45 mm from below the board)
Sequential read speed 5500 MB/s or faster is recommended
Socket type Socket 3 (Key M)

The main consideration is that the SSD must have an effective heat dissipation structure like a heatsink or a heat transfer sheet.

SSD with built-in heatsink
SSD with single heatsink
SSD with double heatsink

*Please note that M.2 SATA SSDs are not compatible.

*Both single-sided and double-sided M.2 SSD devices are supported.

*Majority of M.2 SSD devices (M Key Type 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, and 22110) without a built-in cooling structure will fit the PS5 SSD slot however their cooling structure dimension may vary. Make sure to check the size before purchasing.

With this information, here are the available SSDs in our store that meet the requirement.

Once you are ready with your SSD, please refer to this video guide by Sony on how to install the SSD Expansion by yourself:

Please be extra careful in choosing and installing SSD on your own because neither Sony nor your local retailer is liable since there is no guarantee that an SSD will work despite it being able to meet the specified requirements.

The software update also includes UX enhancement, 3D audio support for built-in TV speakers, and many more. Watch the full video below to see what’s in store for you:
