State of Play 2024: All the Biggest Announcements

During the State of Play in September 2024, we were treated to a smorgasbord of game trailers coming to PlayStation 5 (PS5) and PlayStation VR2 (PSVR2). Some were brand new announcements, while others provided additional info and updates. You’re going to love them. We’ve summarized the announcements in case you don’t have time to watch the full 40-minute presentation.

 

1. Astro Bot Free Update
First up is the Astro Bot update, which brings five (5) new online speedrun levels and ten (10) new bots to rescue. While we didn’t see all of the new bots, the showcase included Eve from Stellar Blade and the Basic Skin from Hell Divers 2. To top this very exciting news off, you'll get this update FOR FREE sometime in Fall 2024.

 

2. Ghost of Yotei Announcement
If you're a fan of Ghost of Tsushima, you’ll love this announcement! Sucker Punch Productions' new title is Ghost of Yotei. According to Andre Goldfarb, Senior Communications Manager at Sucker Punch, the game will feature a new protagonist named Atsu. Set in 1603—over 300 years after the events of Ghost of Tsushima—the game takes place in the lands surrounding Mount Yotei, an area now known as Hokkaido. It’s slated for release in 2025.

 

3. Three New Colorways for the PS5 Console
Introducing the Chroma Collection! This iridescent line of PS5 accessories shines, shimmers, and shifts colors from every angle. Dress up your PS5 Slim with a new console cover, and pair it with a matching DualSense controller. The color options are:

  • Chrome Pearl: A chic blend of pinks and creams.

  • Chroma Indigo: Shifting between deep blues and vivid purples.

  • Chroma Teal: Shimmering through various shades of green.

Pre-orders begin on October 3, 2024. Chrome Pearl and Chroma Indigo launch on November 7, 2024, with Chroma Teal following on January 23, 2025.

 

4. PS5 Pro Game Lineup Unveiled
As we all know, the PS5 Pro has just been announced, and it promises to be the most powerful version of the console yet. The improvements include a larger GPU, enabling PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR)—PlayStation’s take on AI upscaling—along with optimized console performance for consistent frame rates without sacrificing game visuals, and advanced ray tracing for enhanced graphics.

Today, we got a look at the games that are being enhanced for the PS5 Pro. Some are previously released titles, while others are coming out this year:

 

5. Palworld Now Available on PS5
Amid the chaos stirred up by Nintendo’s recent lawsuit against Palworld creators for patent infringement, it was quite surprising to see Palworld in this announcement! The lawsuit is still fresh and likely far from resolution, for now if you're interested in trying this game out, you can check it on PlayStation Store. 

 

6. Monster Hunter Wilds Release Date Reveal
We finally have a release date on the new additional to the Monster Hunter series! Monster Hunter Wilds is set to launch on February 28, 2025. The new trailer showcased more visuals and gameplay. It also hints at a story that mixes heavy narrative beats with comical moments. Pre-order bonuses include outfits for your Palicos, a digital art book, and more. Further information will be revealed during the Capcom Online Program, scheduled to go live on September 26 at 7:00 PDT.

 

7. Aloy's Adventures Are Far from Over!
There’s more content coming for our favorite girl, Aloy! First up is the remastered version of Horizon Zero Dawn, featuring upgraded visuals for PS5 and PC. Plus, the dialogues have been re-recorded for an even more immersive experience. The remaster is set to release on October 31, 2024. If you own the PS4 disc, you can upgrade to the PS5 version, but the upgrade won’t be free.

 

Next is LEGO Horizon Adventures, promising loads of fun! Aside from seeing Horizon characters in a more playful light, the trailer reveals costumes from other games, including the lovable Lombaxes Ratchet and Rivet from Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart and the adorable Sackboy from Sackboy. The game releases on November 14, 2024.

 

8. Stellar Blade Gets Photo Mode, OST Love, and NieR: Automata Collaboration
Stellar Blade now has a Photo Mode with various emotions, poses, and outfits, so you can share your unique in-game moments. Not only that, but the original soundtrack, which consists of about 189 songs, is now available to stream on select platforms. The most exciting announcement? The sci-fi worlds will collide with a NieR: Automata x Stellar Blade collaboration! However, no specific date has been announced for when it's coming.

 

9. Dynasty Warriors: Origins Release Date Announcement
After a long wait, we finally have the release date for Dynasty Warriors: Origins! And it’s much closer than expected: January 17, 2025.

 

10. Dragon Age: The Veilguard
We got an extended look at Dragon Age: The Veilguard. In this trailer, we see the characters battling the dragon named Corius the Icetalon, that spits out blue fire. However it's not the only threat in this universe. In true Dragon Age fashion, you can open the tactical screen mid-fight to adjust to the situation, giving you a tactical advantage and opening up ingenious ways to tackle foes. The game is set to release on October 31, 2024.
